"I can't"
Topic: General Health

"I can't".  Two little words that can have  massive impact on your mind and body.  We've all heard it before, "think positive".  Sounds corny, but it's absolutely 100% true!

I often experience the "I can't" statement from clients regarding exercises.  I'll be assessing a clients flexibility for example and I'll ask them to perform a modified hurdler hamstring stretch (where you bend one leg in and reach for your toes of your straight leg).  "I've never been able to touch my toes" they'll say.  My response is usually; "how many times have you honestly focused on increasing your flexibility in this area? Have you ever done a program specifically to increase your flexibility?"  Most often they can't answer, simply because they haven't.

Remember the old saying "practice makes perfect?" Well, practice also makes things happen too!  If you don't work on your flexibility, you'll never increase your flexibility.  Simple.

Another one I hear a lot is, "I've never been able to do a pushup in my life".  Again, when have you worked towards it? Did you get tested once in high school gym class, couldn't do one, and then pretty much avoided them the rest of your life!?  You can't say, "I can't" when you've never worked towards something.

Change your way of thinking.  If you want to say you've never been able to do something... add to that comment/thought with, "but I'd love to be able to" or "it would be interesting to see if I could work towards it".

Regardless of what your "hurdle" is... don't say "I can't" - ATTACK IT, CONQUER IT and RELISH in the VICTORY!
